Job Description
A surgical technologist, also called a scrub tech, is an allied health professional who works alongside surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses and other surgical personnel during operative procedures. Surgical technologists are trained in the care and safety of the surgical patient before, during and after surgery. They prepare operating rooms, arrange equipment, Sterilize instruments, pass items to surgeons and maintain a sterile environment.
What do Surgical Techs do?
Surgical techs are a vital part of the surgical team. They work alongside surgeons and nurses to ensure that surgeries are performed safely and effectively.
Surgical techs prepare operating rooms for surgery, Sterilize equipment, and help to position patients on the operating table. They also hand instruments and other supplies to surgeons during surgery.
After surgery, surgical techs clean and sterilize the operating room and all of the equipment used during the procedure. They may also help to transport patients to recovery rooms and provide support to families of patients who have undergone surgery.
Educational Requirements
In order to become a surgical technologist in the state of Minnesota, you must have completed an accredited surgical technologist program and hold a current certification from the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist (LCC-ST). There are currently eight accredited surgical technologist programs in Minnesota.

Although, many employers prefer surgical tech candidates to have an Associate’s degree in surgical technology. There are over 300 accredited surgical technology programs throughout the United States that offer either a certificate or degree. Many of these programs can be completed in less than two years.

Certification must be renewed every four years, and Surgical techs can become certified through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or the National Healthcare Association.

In Minnesota, surgical technologists earn an average annual salary of $52,610, which is slightly lower than the national average of $55,120. However, surgical techs in Minnesota can expect to earn a higher salary than those in many other states. For example, the average annual salary for surgical techs in Wisconsin is $49,610, while the average annual salary for surgical techs in North Dakota is $45,130.

In Minnesota, surgical technologists earn an average salary of $21.92 per hour, or $45,610 per year. Salaries range from $16.13 per hour, or $33,620 per year, up to $29.79 per hour, or $61,980 per year.
